Instruments play an essential role in creating research data but they are often only identified in the scientific literature using free text. Through the use of globally unique, persistent identifiers (PIDs), it is now common practice to establish traceable links between research assets. This webinar introduces the Outputs of the RDA Persistent Identification of Instruments Working Group. Of particular focus are the metadata schema for persistent identification of instruments and the proposed solutions for publishing PIDs for instruments at established PID providers. Participants will learn of numerous infrastructures that have adopted the PIDINST Schema as well as B2INST as an EUDAT prototype service for low-barrier registration and persistent identification of instruments.
This webinar is designed for instrument database providers, instrument manufacturers, research infrastructures, and researchers.

Markus Stocker ORCID ID: 0000-0001-5492-3212 TIB - Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology Germany Markus Stocker is head of the Knowledge Infrastructures Research Group at the TIB Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology and a research associate at the Leibniz University Hannover. His research interests lie at the intersection between research infrastructures and research communities, and how such infrastructures acquire, maintain, and share scientific knowledge about human and natural worlds.

Rolf Krahl ORCID ID: 0000-0002-1266-3819 Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie Germany Rolf Krahl is responsible for scientific data management at Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie (HZB). HZB operates large scientific facilities, such as the BESSY II synchrotron light source and users from all over the world come to Berlin to use these facilities for their research. Properly identifying HZB's instruments and linking them with the scientific output created using them, is an obvious need.

Louise Darroch ORCID ID: 0000-0003-4163-9575 British Oceanographic Data Centre, National Oceanography Centre United Kingdom Louise Darroch is a Senior Data Manager at the British Oceanographic Data Centre, part of the National Oceanography Centre, UK. She manages the technical and software development of interoperability interfaces and metadata encodings that enable real-time integration of sensor webs and the Internet of Things into information infrastructure.

Tibor Kálmán ORCID ID: 0000-0001-5194-5053 GWDG (Gesellschaft für wissenschaftliche Datenverarbeitung mbH Göttingen) Germany Tibor Kálmán is Chair of EOSC's PID Policy and Implementation Task Force (EOSC PID TF) and Chair of the Technical Board of the 'Persistent Identifier Consortium for e-Research' (ePIC). His current research focuses on distributed computing paradigms, automated system deployment, and research data management - including persistent identifiers. He also has 20+ years experience as an independent IT consultant specialising in small and medium-sized enterprises. |
